India's navy chief, Admiral DK Joshi, has resigned after a submarine accident took place off the coast of Mumbai on Wednesday (February 26). The incident left seven sailors injured, while two went missing.
The Russian-origin Kilo class INS Sindhuratna was being tested at sea being refitted, when smoke was detected on board at around 6:00 a.m. This forced the crew to close the compartments.
"The submarine was on a routine training sortie off Mumbai's coast when smoke was detected. Measures were taken to contain it," navy spokesman Commander Rahul Sinha told a local news channel.
Seven members of the 94-member crew were evacuated after inhaling smoke, according to the BBC. However, two sailors were missing as many as 12 hours after the incident, and are presumed dead. Reports said there was no serious damage to the submarine. It is unknown what caused the smoke on board.
