The worst winter storms to hit the UK in more than 200 years have battered coastal defences, and left large parts of the south west underwater for more than a month, but nobody really cared that much at first because Somerset Levels is farming country.
Instead of doing everything possible to tackle the rising floodwaters, important people such as Environment agency chief Lord Smith (Labour) and self-styled, man of the people Communities Secretary Eric Pickles (Conservative) have been busy bitching over who was to blame and who should have dredged which river and when.
Meanwhile, the flooding has now began to creep up the River Thames towards London.
Finally, the politicians have sprung into action, donning their Hunter wellington boots, fluorescent jackets and silly hats, as the flood waters now threaten the palatial riverside homes of bankers and city traders rather than a few shit shovelling farm types.
With sand bags proving too little too late and the Daily Mail's campaign asking the government to use Britain's foreign aid budget to fight the floods dying a hasty death people are literally being left to fend for themselves.
