A Japanese office worker in his 40s was hit by a last train at Nippori Station at midnight on Wednesday. Koshiro Imai called his wife to tell her he was on his way home after a New Year's party. Then he apparently fell off the platform and was hit by the train.
The motorman slammed on the brakes when he heard a strange noise. Station staff checked the train, but nothing abnormal was detected. The train resumed operations 10 minutes later.
Later, another staffer on patrol discovered Koshiro Imai bleeding from the head on the evacuation line below the platform. He was immediately sent to hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The JR East Japan Railway Company's public affairs office said station staff had completed proper safety inspection procedures after hearing the strange noise.
