The Indian Point Energy Center in upstate New York was the site of an alarming explosion and fire Saturday evening, according to a Reuters report.

The accident was the result of a transformer failure. The explosion happened approximately 600 feet away from the reactor building and no injuries have been reported.

Plant personnel and emergency crews worked to extinguish the flames, aided by the site’s sprinkler system. The explosion at the plant, located less than 40 miles from New York City, was initially reported at 5:50pm. The fire was reportedly extinguished approximately 25 minutes later.

The cause of the transformer failure has yet to be determined, but the facility officials maintain there was never any threat to public safety.

Emergency personnel had to use special foam to help put out the fire. There is now concern that the foam, as well as oil from the damaged transformer, are leaking into the Hudson River.
