The United Nations says eating insects is beneficial to one's health and could help worldwide in the fight against hunger and pollution. A new UN report points out that insects are low in fat, high in protein and should be promoted as food for people, pets and livestock. Eating insects also comes with side benefits such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, livestock pollution and job creation in developing countries.
The report also highlights the fact that over two billion people worldwide already consume insects as part of their daily diet, largely in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The most consumed insects include beetles, caterpillars, bees, wasps and ants. Certain insects are considered delicacies in some cultures. For example, four large water bottles of grasshoppers can sell for up to 20 US dollars in Africa.
