One Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus police officer is dead and another city police officer is wounded after a shootout took place at the Boston area university's campus. The two men, identified as Russian-born brothers of Chechen background, have been linked to the Boston marathon bombings.
One suspect has been identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed during a shootout later in Watertown, Mass. A manhunt for the second suspect, Dzokhar Tsarnaev, 19, is still underway.
The chaotic series of events began when an MIT campus police officer responded to reports of a disturbance outside the Stata building on campus. A shootout with the two men, who were equipped with assault rifles and explosives, ensued. The campus police officer was mortally wounded and was pronounced dead in hospital.
The two men hijacked a black mercedes SUV and sped from the scene, across Watertown and were cornered in an intersection by a mixed force of city and state police. A shootout followed with eyewitnesses reporting as many at 70 rounds fired back and forth. One of the suspects launched an explosive device toward police. The device was described as large and unwieldy, similar in appearance to the pressure cooker bombs used at the Boston Marathon earlier in the week.
The older brother fell to the ground after being shot in the torso by police officers during the gunfight. Some reports say he was killed when he was run over by a vehicle, although it is unclear if it was the hijacked car or a police vehicle. Meanwhile, the other suspect drove the stolen black mercedes SUV through the police barricade and remains on the run.
