Um Hong-gil became the first Asian and the eighth in the world to successfully reach the summits of fourteen peaks in the Himalayas, all of which were at least 8000m high. The adventurous mountaineer didn’t stop here; he ascended Yalung Kang in 2004 and Lhotse Shar in 2007, and set a new record as the world’s first summiteer to reach sixteen 8,000m peaks in the Himalayas. But in order to set this record, he made 36 trips to the Himalayas, of which 22 attempts ended in failure.
