As a youngster just about everyone has gazed up at the Moon and watched it change its daily appearance, while even binoculars are enough to show the main seas and lunar craters on view. There is a lot of useful work that the amateur astronomer can do, so I recommend that you join your local astronomical society, and attend their meetings and observing nights.
