Wooden row boats on the shore of Thol lake, Gujarat.
The birds are observed far from the shores where tourists board boats to venture into the lake.
Thol Bird Sanctuary is a man-made lake commanding an area of about 14 square kilometres and has a catchment area more than ten times as big. Located on the outskirts of Ahmedabad near Thol village, the lake is surrounded by thick vegetation and has a dirt road which nearly encircles it. Apart from bird watching and nature lovers, Thol Lake is a popular picnic spot for friends and families who generally visit on Sunday mornings.
The lake itself is surrounded by farmlands and marshy areas which are ideal for birds since they get easy access to food and shelter. More than a hundred species of resident as well as migratory birds can be seen at the sanctuary and the surrounding areas.
Greater Pelicans flock in thousands and many other species like mallards, pochards, spoonbills, flamingos, cranes, teals, falcons, vultures, hawks, geese, flycatchers, bee-eaters and woodpeckers can be spotted.
