This video lecture from Reaction Kinetics (F.Sc. first year Chemistry) covers the effect of surface area and light on the rate of a chemical reaction. As the exposed area or the area of contact increases between the reacting molecules, higher numbers of effective collisions take place which increase the rate of reaction. This has been demonstrated graphically for solid and powdered metals’ reactions. The effect of light is to increase the average kinetic energy of the molecules which again increases the rate of reaction. This phenomenon is evident in photosynthesis.
