The Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, is an inter-Korean buffer zone stretching 2km on either side of the Military Demarcation Line, the line of contact between South Korean and North Korean troops at the time of signing the Armistice Agreement in 1953. Having been strictly off-limits to civilians for more than four decades, the area contains one of the most well-preserved ecosystems in the world that have a significant ecological value. What was once a reminder of the country’s tragic past is now transforming into a symbol of peace and hope.
