A three-day festival celebrating the musical heritage of Punjab opens at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts.

“Anhad Naad” showcase the unique ambience of a typical Punjabi village exhibiting the fast vanishing cultural traditions of music, arts and crafts of the northern State. Apart from cultural performances, numerous stalls selling Punjabi artefacts and traditional food items like “makki ki roti” and “sarson ka saag” would be available to visitors.

Jointly organised by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and Punjabi Academy, Delhi, the festival provide a scholarly contribution to the understanding of Punjab’s spiritual musical heritage. It would also bring together different art forms and musical expressions through cultural performances during the day and in the evenings.

Besides a “Punjabi Mela”, the event feature a wide variety of performances including “malvai gidda” (a folk dance performed by men), “saal” (folk drama), “gatka” (martial arts), “dhadi” (martial bards), “naqaal” (mimicry) and “naag been” (snake charmer’s flute).

The variety of secular folk music in the region has added flavour to the folk traditions of Punjab.
