Potatoes are originally from Peru, but with the arrival of fast-food chains, the country is importing 24,000 tons of cheap, processed potatoes. Such imports negatively affect local farmers. The Food Security and Sovereignty bill, supported by small farmers, is stalled in Congress as the executive branch refuses to back sovereignty due to all the free trade agreements it has signed. Furthermore, the consumption of processed, fried potatoes is detrimental to the nation’s health. Rael Mora reports from Lima for teleSUR.
