It has been a little bit since we have seen a test level. Oh, how much I missed them. Who wants playability when you can get levels designed just to show off a certain feature? Just because we aren't developing a level, doesn't mean we can't have a blast with these levels!
Another level by the team known for their demo levels, The QuakeLab, it is pretty hard to go into this and expect anything more than a test for a specific feature. The feature in question is Slime.
Unlike our usual test levels, we don't even get a Weapon this time around. We stand on a tiny platform and seem destined to drop into a pool of Slime and kill ourselves. As usual my walkthrough seeks not to kill myself, so the textual version is extremely simplistic as it just involves turning. To show off the room (quickly) from all angles, I dove into the Slime and killed myself here. This is a very rare exception to the rule of Single Player levels, which usually has me including the goal of not dying.
There are some pretty detail brushes on the ceiling, as is pretty normal with these test levels. They serve their function well, as they normally do, and tend to look well designed compared to what we normally deal with.
Personally I feel it does its function well, just not a function I exactly am that bothered with. I do have to note that this is an extremely basic function like DOORH. I seriously wonder why these levels were made into test levels instead of just being a tutorial of some kind for basic functionality, saving test levels for more interesting and experimental features.
Overall, this level is a test level which features Slime. If you come into this level expecting playability, as you should since this is included in a massive list of unorganized levels which Aftershock implies is a level intended to be played, you will be sorely disappointed. If you come into this level with the intent of having a convenient manner to quickly kill your player while hearing his screams of agony, we won't judge here your reasons for doing such, you will find this a masterpiece.
