After guarantor countries urged a de-escalation of Colombia’s armed conflict this week, FARC guerrillas declared a month-long unilateral ceasefire that will begin on July 20. The Broad Front for Peace will oversea the ceasefire, and a spokeswoman recalled that during the FARC’s last 5-month ceasefire, violence decreased by 90%. Social organizations believe the ball is now in the government’s court and that this will be a test of President Juan Manuel Santos’ commitment to peace.
