Violent clashes erupted as over 150,000 students marched through Santiago’s main avenue Alameda on Thursday. College and university students, together with their grandparents and parents, participated in the march, which adopted the slogan 'Let Chile Defend its Education.' Police used water cannon and tear gas on protesters, who hurled missiles in the direction of police vehicles and tried to block them from moving. Over 134 students were arrested, and several police officers and protesters were injured.

The rally was organized by Confederation of Chilean Students (CONFECH), who cited low graduate salaries and heavy debts as the reasons for the march.
