Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari believes that the state is using religion to make sure that people are dependent on them.

According to him greater freedom poses no threat to Islam and authorities fear the freedom that secularism and liberalism could bring as they fear losing control over the people and hence their political legitimacy.
