It’s an act of physical ingenuity and bravery – the annual festival of building Tarragona towers or castles and attracts thousands to the Catalonia town every years.
The human tower is built around a base or pinya, which acts as a safety net should the tower collapse.
Various teams attempt different sorts of towers all requiring co-ordination, balance and nerve when a normally a child tops it off.
The whole event is to celebrate Saint Magi, the town’s local patron saint
The tradition was first documented in 1712 in a town near Tarragona.
