Defeating ISIL only possible with change of Syrian leader says US President Barack Obama

Countering ISIL and violent terrorism was the title of a gathering of world leaders chaired by US President Barack Obama.

It took place on the sidelines of the United Nations a day after Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin had addressed the UN General Assembly.

The future of Syrian President Basher al-Assad in the fight against the militant group is the main source of disagreement between Moscow and Washington.

“In Syria, as I said yesterday, defeating ISIL requires – I believe – a new leader, and an inclusive government that unites the Syrian people in the fight against terrorist groups. This is gonna be a complex process, and as I’ve said before, we are prepared to work with all countries including Russia and Iran to find a political mechanism in which it is possible to begin a transition process,” Obama told the summit.
