GIBSON, LOUISIANA ? At least three people were killed and two were seriously injured in an explosion at a natural gas plant in Gibson, Louisiana on Thursday, authorities said.
Thirteen employees and 19 contract workers were on site of a Williams Partners' natural gas facility in Louisiana. The facility was not operational at the time and natural gas was not flowing through the pipeline system, said Warren Toups, the plant's operations manager.
At around 11 a.m., contract workers were conducting maintenance when the blast occurred, killing three and wounding two workers.
Authorities said the blast source may have been from a tank that collects hydrocarbons that build up within natural gas pipelines. An investigation is ongoing.
An explosion in a chemical plant also owned by Williams Partners killed one and injured 73 people in June 2013. The company paid a federal fine of $36,000 for safety violations.
