The expanse of space is practically inconceivable to most of the populace of our little Earthen planet. Perhaps it is in it's scale that we as humans feel an indomitable need to explore and fill the space between worlds, perhaps it is this exploratory nature that truly makes us human... or maybe we just enjoy strapping weird things to rockets and watching them leave us far behind. Either way, this list explores some of the more bizarre things that we have sent to space that make the second option seem all the more likely.
It is obvious of course that the majority of these odd items or creatures have been sent skyward in the name of science. Tiny travelers sent out amongst the stars in the pursuit of more knowledge and better understanding, an expansion of thought and mind inspired by the vastness of the universe around us. Then, there are things like a Pizza Hut Pizza being delivered to a Cosmonaut that just sort of make you pause and say.... What? You read that correctly, Pizza Hut spent months working with the Russian Space Program designing the perfect oven baked item for the crew on board the International Space Station in 2001. The "space" Pizza Hut pizza delivered to the ISS featured traditional ingredients including a crispy crust, pizza sauce and cheese, but was topped with salami to enhance the pizza's flavor because researchers found that pepperoni did not withstand the 60-day testing process. In addition, the Pizza Hut space pizza was made six inches in diameter - the size of the Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizza - in order to fit into the smaller-sized oven aboard the ISS. Before final certification for consumption was given, the vacuum-sealed Pizza Hut pizza had to undergo rigorous stabilized thermal conditions to determine freshness-stay and life span.
While that might seem like one of the weirdest things that might make a list about outer space it most certainly isn't. After food items (which also includes a contraband Corned Beef Sandwich) things take a turn for the sexual to include porn and vials upon vials of semen, after that a twist for the nerdy with beloved pop culture props and the ashes of sci-fi giants. Space is an incredible journey for mankind... even if we just want to use it as a place to hold our weird things.
