A 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck in northern Pakistan and was felt in Afghanistan and India.

Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, said the quake was felt across the Pakistani capital, forcing people out of their homes.

"The tremors continued for 30 to 40 seconds," our correspondent said. Strong tremors were felt in Kabul, New Delhi and Islamabad on Monday. In the Pakistani capital, walls swayed back and forth and people poured out of office buildings in a panic, reciting verses from the Quran.

Vineet Gahlot, the director of seismology at the Indian Meteorological Department, said the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 and an epicenter deep in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Pakistan state TV reported the same magnitude.

The full extent of the damage and the number of possible casualties was not yet known.
A strong earthquake rocked North India, including parts of the national capital region. Initial report say the epicentre was in Northern Pakistan and the tremors have been clocked at 7.5 on the Richter scale.
People were seen running out of offices in Noida.
According to initial reports the epicentre has been recorded in the Hindukush mountain region between Pakistan and Afghanistan. “Hindu Kush earthquake is 7.5-magnitude and 42 miles from Chitral in Pakistan,” agencies quoted USGS as saying.
Our bureaus in Chandigarh and Srinagar have reported the massive tremors though no reports of damage have come in.
