Përfundon procesi i pastrimit te sipërfaqes se Gërdecit nga municionet. Por edhe pse projekti tashme është mbyllur, Departamenti Amerikan i Shtetit paralajmëron se disa zona ne Gërdec mbeten ende te kontaminuara, pasi disa municione pas shpërthimit kane mbetur te varrosura thelle ne nëntokë. Me kërkesë të autoriteteve shqiptare, Shtetet e Bashkuara ofruan ndihmë jo vetëm financiare, por edhe me eksperte ne terren qe ndihmuan ne procesin e pastrimit te predhave te pa shpërthyera te artilerisë, predhave te mortajave dhe municioneve te tjera. Me zbatimin e këtij programi, u hoqën tre mijë e 85 ton municione të pashpërthyera dhe 146 mijë e 500 copë municione të rrezikshme. Shpërthimi i fabrikës qe merrej me demontimin e tyre çoi në vdekjen e 26 personave dhe plagosjen e mbi 300 të tjerëve, si dhe detyroi zhvendosjen e më shumë se 700 familjeve nga shtëpitë e tyre. Departamenti Amerikan i Shtetit mbështeti Shqipërinë me një program me vlere 14.5 mln dollarë per pastrimin e hapësirës përreth zonës ku ndodhi shpërthimi i 15 marsit 2008. Sipas Departamentit Amerikan të Shtetit, tragjedia vë në dukje sfidat që paraqesin municione të vjetra të paqëndrueshme të kohës së Luftës së Ftohtë, si dhe nevojën që qeveritë të mbajnë dhe të largojnë si duhet inventarët e armëve të tepërta.
