One look at a bunch of blooming saffron flowers makes one fall in love with them. The violet of the flowers painting the whole landscape in its colour and the flutter of the red stamens in the wind, make for a sight to savour.
Saffron bulbs are sown generally from July to September and the flowers are ready to be plucked towards the end of October. The flower picking season lasts over a fortnight. The stamens are separated from the flowers in homes and the stamens are then dried and either sold or stored. These stamens are the saffron that is used as a spice.
