MINNEAPOLIS — Five Black Lives Matter protesters protesting the killing of a black man in Minneapolis were allegedly shot by a group of white supremacists outside a police station on Monday, the Star Tribune reported.
The shooting happened at around 10:45 p.m. near the Black Lives Matter protest encampment at the Fourth Precinct police station. Three white supremacists showed up at the protest, as protesters say they had done on most nights, and were taunting protesters.
When about a dozen protesters tried to move the men away from the area, shots rang out, and five people were hit. The victims are being treated at North Memorial Medical Center for non life-threatening injuries. Three were able to drive themselves to the hospital, while two were taken by ambulance.
The suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made yet.
Protesters have been outside the police station every day since the police shooting of 24-year-old Jamar Clark on November 15 while he was allegedly unarmed and handcuffed. They call for the release of video footage of the incident. Authorities do not want to release the footage, saying it would harm their investigation into the incident, CBS News reported.
Jamar's brother, Eddie Sutton, issued the following statement in response to the shooting: "Thank you to the community for the incredible support you have shown for our family in this difficult time. We appreciate Black Lives Matter for holding it down and keeping the protests peaceful. But in light of tonight's shootings, the family feels out of imminent concern for the safety of the occupiers, we must get the occupation of the 4th precinct ended and onto the next step."
