LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — A Kentucky woman had to have emergency surgery on an abscess on her wrist after a hair-tie she was using caused a life-threatening infection, CBS reported. About two weeks ago, Audree Kopp was moving into a new house when she noticed a bump growing on the wrist of her dominant right hand. She went to the doctor who gave her some antibiotics, but the infection worsened. She visited the emergency room, where Dr. Amit Gupta from Norton Healthcare performed surgery. "She had a large abscess on the back of her wrist, so I basically made an incision and drained the puss all the way down," Dr. Gupta told WLKY. Gupta also said the bacteria probably got under her skin from pores or hair follicles. She posted on her Facebook page about the infection, writing that there were three kinds of infections including strep, staph, and poly negative bacteria. Kopp told WLKY that if she hadn't gotten the surgery, the infection could have gotten much worse, or caused her to be in a coma. Doctor's suggest that people avoid leaving hair ties on their wrists for long amounts of time to avoid infection.
