During its original release, the 1934 Fleischer Studios' Betty Boop cartoon, RED HOT MAMA received both praise and complaints from some U.S. theatre owners. It was banned outright by The British Board of Censors with the comment, "a film depicting the comic treatment of Hell is unsuitable for public consumption."
