WOODLAND, WASHINGTON — A Washington man is being called a hero-homeowner after he managed to nab and detain a couple of intruders in his home last week and hold them until police arrived.
When Bill Lahti rolled up to his family's house in rural Woodland last Monday, he saw a truck with the words "College Pro Painters" on the side parked in his yard, and that the house's front door was ajar.
Lahti told KATU News that after he jumped out of his truck and kicked his front door open, he found two young men in his home. Lahti immediately pulled out his gun and forced the two intruders onto their knees.
It was in that moment that Lahti also experienced the universe's cruel sense of humor, as his phone batteries died, preventing him from being able to call 911 so he delegated the task to one of the intruders.
According to KATU News, Lahti was able to detain the intruders until sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene.
Sheriff's deputies have since identified the alleged burglars as 21-year-old Jared Barker and 18-year-old Aaron Vigna.
A spokesperson for the local Sheriff's office says the young men's arrests reveal the benefits of someone arming themselves safely, legally and with proper training.
