BEIJING — Air quality problems are nothing new in China, but people have come up with some interesting and unusual ways to breathe cleaner air in the midst of high levels of air pollution.

China's government issued the first air quality red alert last Tuesday, Bloomberg reported. They urge citizens not to go outside, and to take public transportation is possible to cut down on the amount of pollutants being pumped into the atmosphere.

People wearing face masks is pretty common in Asia, but there are some different takes on the dust mask, or surgical mask, including nasal air filters like the Infipure invisible air pollution mask.

Artists have also developed healthy breathing solutions like the breathing bicycle, designed by British artist Matt Hope, which uses the energy produced from pedaling to filter the air, and pump it into a mask worn by the person riding the bike. Chinese artist Chih Chiu created another creative way to breathe clean air by attaching a mask to a backpack that has a plant in it producing pure oxygen.
