NOVATO, CALIFORNIA — "Squirrel attack" are two words that don't elicit fear from many people, but the wounds suffered by an elderly California couple the day after Thanksgiving should give people a reason to be wary of these medium-size rodents — that are actually related to the mountain beaver.
While doing chores in his garage the day after Thanksgiving, Novato, California resident Richard Williams, 87, noticed a squirrel had slipped into his garage.
"He charged me and jumped, and from then on, the battle started," Williams told CBS SF Bay Area News.
Williams batted away the creature, but again and again it returned — leaping onto the man, smashing his glasses and scratching and biting wherever possible. Hearing screams from the garage, Norma Williams, 83, came running to save her husband. She grabbed a broom and started whacking the squirrel, which then began attacking Norma.
Finally, Williams says he managed to grab the vicious furball by the tail and slam it down on the ground, momentarily stunning it. The squirrel then recovered and scampered off, leaving Richard and Norma covered in dozens of bites and wounds. A neighbor took them to hospital where they were bandaged, stitched and given dozens of shots, including vaccines for rabies and tetanus.
Wildlife experts theorized the squirrel may have been previously fed by humans and lost its fear of entering homes, before graduating to attacks. The same animal is thought to be responsible for attacking others over the past two weeks, but as you might imagine, it's pretty hard to hunt down the offending squirrel as they all kind of look alike.
Bottom line? Wild squirrels might be cute, but they can also be exceptionally vicious.
