SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA — The husband and wife who shot and killed 14 people at a holiday celebration in San Bernardino earlier this month did not post their support for Islamic extremist groups online before the attack, the FBI said Wednesday.

Previous reports suggested the couple had posted openly in support of jihad, although investigators now say Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik had only talked about martyrdom in private messages, and such messages are not easily accessed, the FBI said.

FBI director James Comey told reporters that there was no evidence the couple were part of a cell or were being directed by foreign terrorists.

He added that Malik and Farook had become radicalized over a period of time that began before the emergence of the Islamic State or ISIS.

According to the New York Times, Malik had spoken openly about jihad on social media before the couple, who met online, got together in the United States. But the FBI clarified that this was only in private messages. She travelled to the US from Saudi Arabia on a fiance visa.

The announcement came after US security officials came under criticism from senators for not discovering her online declarations of support for jihad.

Meanwhile, the White House announced that families of the victims will meet President Barack Obama when he visits San Bernardino on Friday.
