Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was captured today following a shootout with Mexican marines in the city of Los Mochis, according to Fox61.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto announced the arrest via Twitter.

“Mission accomplished: We got him. I’d like to inform the Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained,” the post on his account read.

Five people were killed and one marine was wounded in the operation. Six others were arrested.

El Chapo was nearly captured in late October when Mexican authorities pinpointed his location in a mountain in northwestern Mexico.  He suffered injuries in his leg and face during his escape in an ATV.
El Chapo was hiding at a ranch near Cosala in the rugged Sierra Madre Mountains in western Mexico, NBC News reports.
Marines reportedly raided El Chapo's ranch hideout in helicopters, but were driven back by Guzman's security forces. The Marines later entered the camp on foot and found cell phones, medication and two-way radios.
El Chapo escaped from a maximum-security prison outside Mexico City in July.
This followed the drug lord’s arrest in Mexico City in February 2014. Guzman was taken without incident in a Mexican raid on a condominium tower in Mazatlan, Mexico, according to the New York Times.
El Chapo is alleged to be the billionaire criminal mastermind behind the notorious Sinaloa Drug Cartel that has funneled the streets of Chicago with 80 percent of the heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine, according Drug Enforcement Administration as reported by Business Insider. The drugs have a street value of $3 billion.
