DETROIT — Owners of Ford Rangers, years 2004 - 2006, may be in danger. The auto-maker is recalling 391,000 pickups equipped with the Takata-made airbags.

Takata-designed propellants are made from ammonium nitrate. If exposed to high humidity, the propellants can produce too much pressure inside the inflator, causing it to crack and explode.

The recall announcement comes days after the death of a South Carolina man was attributed to a faulty airbag.

Last December, Joel Knight, 52, died after striking a cow with his 2006 Ranger. When the airbag deployed, it sent metal shrapnel toward the driver. One of those shrapnel pieces struck Knight in the neck, causing him to die from what would have been a non-fatal accident.

Ten people have been killed and more than 100 people have been injured by faulty Takata airbags.
