CHICAGO — Six people including a 12-year-old boy were found dead at a house in Chicago on Thursday in the deadliest single act of violence to hit the city in more than 13 years.
A relative told ABC affiliate WLS that the victims were all members of the same family. They were named by WLS as Noe Martinez Sr. and his wife Rosa, aged in their 60s; their son Noe Martinez Jr., aged in his late 30s; their daughter Maria Martinez, also known as Herminia; and her two sons, Leonardo and Alexi.
The cause of the deaths was unknown, but police said the bodies had trauma, according to WLS. At this point there appeared to be no threat to the community, police said, according to WLS.
"It's going to be a crime scene. This guy looks like he's been stabbed multiple times," said a police officer who arrived at the scene on Thursday afternoon in a dispatch call broadcast by WLS.
Police officers discovered the six bodies at 1:30 p.m. after arriving at the house on a well-being check. They were called by a colleague of Noe Martinez Jr., who said he had not shown up for two days to his job as a window cleaner with United Airlines at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, according to WLS.
After their knocks on the door went unanswered, responding officers spotted what looked like a body on the floor inside the brick bungalow, according to WLS.
The officers then discovered five more bodies in different places in the house, CNN reported.
"There's a very real possibility that this is all something internal that was contained within the residence," Interim Police Superintendent John Escalante said at a news conference in front of the house, according to CNN.
Escalante admitted it was "very probable that this is all the same family inside," but added police would need time to establish the identity of the victims and what happened inside the house.
"This is going to be an investigation that's going to take some time," he said, according to CNN. "We haven't ruled out anything at this point."
In 2003, seven people died in a gun battle in Chicago's Canaryville district between police officers and disgruntled former auto parts company employee Salvador Tapia, according to CBS News.
