KARACHI, PAKISTAN — The Pakistani military on Friday announced the arrest of 97 Islamist militants tied to three terror groups in the southern city of Karachi, foiling a planned attack intended to free Khalid Omar Sheikh, a British-born militant sentenced to death for his role in the 2002 beheading of journalist Daniel Pearl, according to a Reuters report.

The plotters, who were arrested at some point in the last year and half, were reportedly readying final preparations for an assault on a prison in the Pakistani city of Hyderabad.

The group reportedly planned to raid Hyderabad Central Jail with two explosives-filled vans.

The attack plan reportedly involved six suicide bombers whose mission it was to detonate the vans next to two of the prison's barracks.

The militants reportedly intended to free some 100 prisoners, including Khalid Omar Sheikh.

While their reasons were unclear, the plotters also intended to kill about 35 prisoners.

Much remains uncertain about the failed operation, which was part of a crackdown by Pakistan's military against militant groups, but planning was reportedly 90% complete, according to a CNN report.
