BEAVERTON, OREGON — Boxing great Manny Pacquiao is losing fans and supporters fast after making anti-gay remarks on television in the Philippines earlier this week. Now, he's lost his endorsement deal with the world's top sporting brand.
Running for a senate seat in his home country, the 37-year-old prizefighter commented that animals are better than humans, because "They know how to distinguish male from female. If we approve of male on male or female on female, then man is worse than animals."
After his comments caught some serious backlash, Pacman took to instagram to clarify what he meant, but stopped short of retracting his statement, attributing his beliefs to the bible. Pacquiao is a devout Catholic, and the Philippines has the largest population of Catholic followers of any Asian nation.
When that didn't go over well, he posted a video apology to Twitter saying he shouldn't have compared gays to animals, and asked for forgiveness from anyone he's hurt. But he maintained that he hadn't changed his position regarding same sex marriage, or his beliefs.
Nike called the boxer's comments "abhorrent" and has since severed ties with the eight-division world champion. Pacquiao's been under contract with Nike for eight years, and has one final fight against Timothy Bradley in April before he retires.
