Made with the intention of launching a trilogy about Canada, Kevin Smith’s Tusk is a divisive shock-horror-comedy about a podcast host who is captured, kidnapped and turned into a walrus. My re-edit imagines the film as a TV miniseries broken into two episodes. The experiment plays with pacing and structure to change the rhythm, as well as the emotional impact of the film. I see this less as an attempt to correct Kevin Smith’s work than to re-imagine it. Without removing elements that were in the original film, I restructured and in some cases corrected the original cut to suit a more television friendly structure. Some of my editing decisions simply make cuts a bit smoother or have a little more punch (editing on a beat), where in other cases I’m reworking meaning and trying to reward the audience with elements of foreshadowing and building of suspense. My edit doesn’t save all that is wrong with the film, but I also like to think it highlights that Smith’s film doesn’t deserve nearly as much hate as it receives. I hope you like my little experiment, please be sure to let me know what you think!
