En route for the EU? Serbia votes in snap election

Serbs are at the polls in a snap election many view as a vote in favour of the European Union or Russia.

Progressive Party

Current prime minister and conservative Progressive Party leader Aleksandar Vucic is tipped for a majority win.

He wants to steer Serbia towards EU membership.

The vote has been brought forward by two years, as the PM says he needs a new mandate to implement the tough reforms required to make Serbia eligible for a place in the Union.

Socialist Party of Serbia

In the middle is Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic’s Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS). It has campaigned for a more cautious approach to the EU, while maintaining sound relations with both Russia and China.

Radical Party

Polls suggest Vojislav Šešelj’s ultra-nationalist Radical Party is making a comeback.

Last month, a United Nations tribunal acquitted Serbia’s former deputy prime minister on counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, meaning he is once more able to run for election.
