Pentagon punishes 16 for destructive, mistaken attack on Afghan hospital

Sixteen members of the U.S. military were punished by the Pentagon Friday for their roles in a mistaken aerial attack on a hospital in Afghanistan last fall that killed 42.
It added it has adopted new rules to prevent such catastrophes in the future.
“We are fully committed to learning from this tragedy and minimizing the risk of civilian casualties during future combat operations," General Joseph Votel said.
Votel added that none of those involved will face court martial, but the administrative punishments levied against them—ranging from removal from command, letters of reprimand, to counseling—likely cut their military careers short.
