MESA, ARIZONA — On January 18, 26-year-old Daniel Shaver became the latest unarmed victim to be shot dead at the hands of a law enforcement officer, this time in Arizona.
Mesa Police were called to the hotel after someone reported seeing a man pointing a gun from a window several floors up. The chilling body cam footage, taken inside a La Quinta Inn, shows the suspense leading up to the moment Officer Philip "Mitch" Brailsford ends Shaver's life.
Omitted from the footage is the moment Brailsford, wielding an AR-15, shot Daniel Shaver five times while on his hands and knees, saying "Please don't shoot me." Working in pest control, Shaver did have two pellet guns in his room, but was unarmed during the incident.
The rest of the footage is being withheld until sentencing in the case is completed. Terminated from the force two months after the incident, Brailsford has pled not guilty to second degree murder.
Daniel Shaver leaves behind his childhood sweetheart Laney Sweet, and their two young daughters.
