In May of 2012, Aimee Copeland was out enjoying a beautiful Georgia day with friends, but not long into their excursion, she had an experience that changed her life forever.
While gliding over a creek on a makeshift zipline, Copeland fell and suffered a severe cut on her leg that needed 22 stitches to close, reports CNN.
According to the Atlanta Journal‑Constitution, days later, when her condition worsened, Copeland went to the hospital and learned that she had been infected by a flesh-eating bacteria.
Survival required that her hands, left leg, and right foot be amputated.
Copeland says her fight to regain control over life has been tough, but she has since made peace with her new reality.
As evidence of her overcoming the challenges of both mind and body, she recently posted a photo to Facebook of herself in a bikini on a beach.
The triumphant image has garnered thousands of likes, shares, and supportive comments.
