An elderly couple’s love for each other was apparent even in their tragic deaths.
Eighty-one-year-old Byron McKaig and his wife Gladys, age 90, were confirmed casualties of the Erskine fire that has devastated parts of Lake Isabella area in California, reports the Washington Post.
Neighbor Bill Johnson tells the Los Angeles Times that he actually spotted their bodies on Friday morning.
He is quoted as saying, “He was...on top of her, and they were together, like he was blocking her from the fire.”
Johnson goes on to explain, “It made me sick because immediately I saw and knew exactly what had happened — that they were alive and ran out of this burning inferno and got stuck, and that was where they ended.”
According to KPCC, a memorial service for the couple has been tentatively scheduled for July 23, depending on the status of the fire which has already burned through more than 70,000 acres.
