TAOYUAN, TAIWAN — A tour bus carrying a group of Chinese tourists caught on fire on a highway near Taiwan’s capital city of Taipei on Tuesday, killing 26 people.
The bus was traveling westbound on Freeway No. 2 in Taoyuan around 1 p.m., just three kilometers from Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport, when it caught on fire and began swaying from side to side before crashing into a guardrail, which caused the fire to spread faster.
Authorities said there were no survivors, even though the bus was equipped with eight emergency exits and four emergency windows.
Those killed included the driver and 24 tourists from the Chinese province of Liaoning who were visiting Taiwan on an eight-day tour.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
