Clothing innovation at M&S

This case study looks at how clothing changed during the 1950s as a result of innovations from Marks & Spencer.

Using examples from the M&S Company Archive, the case study builds on the concepts of incremental and radical innovations and introduces the social aspects of the innovation process.

The case study then moves forward to the present day, and demonstrates how the innovations of the 1950s have impacted on the clothing industry, and how incremental innovations can, in aggregate, make for a radical innovation.

Have your say
Before moving on to hear about the future directions of clothing development at M&S, take some time to reflect on how M&S and the industry as a whole might move forward in the future. How might they need to innovate to keep ahead of competitors?
