Aug 10, 2016 – A 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit near Upper Lake in Lake County on Tuesday night, according to the USGS.
The quake struck at around 7:57 p.m., about 19 kilometers (5.6 miles) north-northeast of Upper Lake. The quake had a depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.5 miles).
According to Michell Lewis who works at the Lakeport post office. Her dogs started barking 4-5 seconds before the quake. The house shook in a rolling motion. Afterwards she went to check on the local Post Office and didn’t see any damage. She said there wan’t damage to her home nothing fell, just shook. Strongest quake she has ever felt there.
Erick who was at work at the Lakeview Market in Lucerne at the time of the earthquake, said the store shook fast for about 1 second. Nothing fell but wine bottle on the shelves shook. He said he first could feel the quake through his feet the move up to his chest. Mirror’s on the wall’s, lights all shook, but nothing fell.
Erick also said two people he heard reported the lake water shaking, and large bubble’s rose from the lake.
“It was crazy” Erick said.
Rebekah Dolby, who works at the Lakeport police department said the quake shook strongly and lasted for about 12 seconds. A strong rolling motion, up and down. It too was the strongest earthquake she ever felt. She was at home of the time of the earthquake on the second flood of her home. She said she was familiar with earthquakes moving from Southern California and quickly moved from the second floor of her home to the lower level. Telling her boyfriend who went for the doorway, he did want to be in the upper floor during the quake.
Most of the homes in Lake country are wooden structures or mobile homes. Wooden homes are the safest structures during a earthquake. This most likely why there was a lack of damage reported.
Upper Lake did have a water main break and the power was out for a few hours but quickly restored. 10:00pm.
The Indian Valley Reservoir a earthen dam to the east of the earthquake, reported no damage.
The six-mile long, one-mile wide reservoir with a gross capacity of 300,600 acre feet. The dam includes a hydroelectric plant.
A daily walk though inspection said no damage was reported. There is no on site watchman, no cameras etc.
There has been 23 after shocks the strongest being a M3.0 other’s being mostly M2.2 to M2.7. as of 3:34 PM PST
The earthquake run’s along the Bartlett Springs Fault Zone that runs up to Lake Pillsbury and east towards the Indian Valley Reservoir.
The Bartlett Springs fault system is a major northwest-trending zone comprised of discontinuous, steeply dipping dextral strike-slip faults associated with the San Andreas fault system.
The Bartlett Springs fault system can be mapped for at least 74 miles from the southern side of Round Valley southeast to near Clear Lake. North of Round Valley, it is suggested that the Lake Mountain fault may by the northern continuation of the Bartlett Springs fault system, indicating a total length of about 102 miles.
The San Andreas fault system in northern California includes three sub-parallel right-lateral faults: the San Andreas, Ma’acama, and Bartlett Springs.
Mendocino triple junction where the Pacific, North America, and Gorda (southern Juan de Fuca) plates meet.
So…….A M7. quake could be coming…. the question is where. Eureka? Santa Rosa? So somewhere in between….
