[email protected] Aug 21, 2016 – KCK police officers removed a live grenade from a car at 200 South 8th Street on Sunday.
The car was illegally parked and unregistered at 3:03 p.m. While police completed the tow report they saw what appeared to be the top part of a grenade protruding from a velvet bag.
A bomb technician was able to make his way to the car, open the door and pull the device out. He ensured it was taped and rolled it into a black bag to safely take it to the bomb squad truck.
The car, which police learned was stolen, had dealership tags on it. It will be checked for fingerprints as authorities try to determine who owns it, and who was driving it.
Police said they aren’t sure how long the car was parked there, but noted that when they first checked out the car, there were a lot of children around, so they’re grateful no one was hurt.
That vehicle was later towed away from the scene. The grenade will be detonated at a safe place.
