TAIPEI — A Chinese official visiting Taipei was ‘greeted’ by pro-independence protesters at the airport on Monday.

Sha Hailin, director of Shanghai municipal committee united front work department, came to Taipei to attend the annual twin-city forum between Taipei and Shanghai. The event started in 2010 and has continued since then. During the forum, Sha is expected to meet with Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je.

China has officially halted communications with Taiwan since President Tsai Ing-wen’s inauguration in May. Tsai has refused to acknowledge the “1992 consensus,” an agreement that China claims means that both sides recognize there is only one China.

“Of course everyone is very clear about this political foundation, in that everyone acknowledges the "One China" (policy). Looking back, cross-strait relations have developed speedily since 2008, and there has been a state of vivid cooperation and exchange,” Sha reiterated the importance of the one China policy at the press conference for the forum.

However, neither protesters nor Taiwanese netizens are accepting Sha’s perspective, with many asking that the “Communist Bandit” to leave Taiwan.
