Steve Eckel and Sarah Mazzone were walking separately through a Howell, New Jersey Kohl’s parking lot on Monday when they each heard the cries of a young child.
Both followed the sound and found the baby who was alone and sweating profusely inside a sweltering car.
Eckel grabbed a sledgehammer from his trunk and used it to gain entry into the locked vehicle, notes CBS News.
Once the little girl was safely removed, Mazzone cooled her down by dousing her with water.
According to the New York Daily News, police were at the scene when the mother, Karen Gruen, emerged from the store.
She has since been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
