Ten years after Anna Politkovskaya’s murder, the Kremlin critic’s colleagues and friends have paid tribute to her.
One woman carried a poster reading: “They killed her on the day of President Vladimir Putin’s birthday. Hard to believe it’s a mere coincidence.”
The crowd gathered in front of the offices of the Russian journalist’s former newspaper Novaya Gazeta, where people demanded that investigators track down those responsible for masterminding Politkovskaya’s shooting in her apartment building.
“Generally speaking since her murder there have been more than 700 attacks against journalists, 57 of whom were killed. This is an utter tragedy that in Russia specifically those who tell people the truth become the victims of killings, beatings and so on and these cases are never solved,” said Galina Mikhalyova of the Russian United Democratic – or Yabloko – Party.
Six people were convicted for involvement in the killing. However, the US joined the calls of her colleagues to bring to justice those who instructed the murder. “Ongoing impunity for these unsolved murders continues to undermine freedom of speech and respect for justice and human rights in Russia,” a statement read.
