GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA — A 3-year-old is in critical condition after falling from an escalator in Malaysia.
The unfortunate event occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Bukit Jambul mall in George Town, the capital of the Malaysian state of Penang, Malaysia’s Malaysian Digest reported.
The little girl has been identified Nur Aqilah Amani Zuraimi. The mall’s CCTV footage shows that she was riding on her father’s shoulders just moments before the accident.
When they got onto the escalator, the father suddenly tilted his head, causing the girl to fall from a height of about nine feet to the ground floor.
Intensive care staff at the Penang Hospital said the girl suffered a cracked skull and internal bleeding.
According to Malaysia’s News Strait Times, Malaysia’s Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim said the father was responsible for the accident.
She said the parents could face a fine of 20,000 Malaysian ringgit (about $4,768) and a jail term of 10 years.
